Cargills (Ceylon) PLC will be the Platinum sponsors of the champion outfit
from the hill capital - Kandy Sports Club and the sponsorship cheque was handed
over to the club by the Group Manager of the Company Rumaiz Rahim at a ceremony
held at the Club auditorium on Thursday evening.
Speaking on behalf of the Chief Executive of Cargills (Ceylon) PLC Ranjit
Page the Group Manager Rumaiz Rahim said that Kandy Sports Club remains the
undisputed front runner in the field of rugby in the country today having over
the years won a large haul of trophies over a number of years starting from
1992. They are no doubt a dominant force.
The sponsorship deal sees Cargills becoming both the Official Partner and
Official Food and Beverage partner of Kandy Sports Club. The agreement is central
to the Cargills youth and sports sponsorship strategy and reinforces the
company's long term commitment to the development of youth and local talent.
The
new partnership would see Cargills Brands supporting the sporting and
entertainment circuit of the hill capital whilst focussing on the development of
the sport at school level.
Rumaiz Rahim said Cargills has been synonymous with youth development and
they have in the recent past put their strength behind several national sorting
events. Their commitment towards development of youth is a long term one and is
a sustained effort. This is why they have signed up with one of the foremost
clubs in the form of Kandy Sports Club and have committed themselves for a
period of five years. This would be the first of several strategic partnerships
Cargills would be establishing with sporting bodies in Sri Lanka towards
contributing to the overall development of youth.
The partnership between Cargills and Kandy Sports Club has two elements. One
is the main sponsorship while the second aspect is the social responsibility
aspect which has been built into the agreement. Cargills is a corporate entity
that strives to create a value for the masses through every aspect of its
business. Through their relationship with the talented players of Kandy Sports
Club, Cargills would strive hard to build the next generation of players from
Kandy. This would be a continuous programme which would see the direct
involvement of Kandy SC players at school level rugby.
The President of Kandy Sports Club Dr. Sarath Kapuwatte speaking on the
occasion said that since 1992, Kandy Sports Club have earned a name for
themselves by becoming the leading club in the rugby circuit today. Winning
trophies has become a habit for them, though things were made difficult at
times. The players did their part and officials did their part off the field and
they emerged victors in both.
He said that this club has a rich history of over 135 years and Cargills an
even older history of 168 years having being founded in 1844. Like the revival
of old friendship, it is ni ce to see two bodies who have passed the 100 year
mark partnering together towards the same goal.
